A major theme we have addressed during recent conferences has to do with exploring alternatives to the statistical counterfactual.  There are other ways to determine (with varying degrees of relevance and validity) what would have happened within the target population WITHOUT a program's interventions.

First, here is a summary of Alternative Approaches to Counterfactuals  discussed during a think tank session at AEA in Orlando November 2009.
